International Bitterness Units (IBU)
International bitterness units, shown on most beer containers as IBU, is the measurement given for the bitterness of the beer. The scale is 0 to 100, which is the highest bitterness a beer can score. If you are not happy drinking a high hoppy beer keep to a low IBU. You also need to understand that number alone does not mean the beer will have a bitter taste if the brewer uses sweet malts to off set the bitterness. So bitterness of a beer is produced by the hops the brewer uses to brew the beer. Malts can also help change the bitterness of a beer by the sweetness it can add.
